Indians and Issue Salience

While it's not as much fun as my weekly conversations with Cousin Ray Sixkiller, I do still get to write op-eds. This one is a bit Indian-centric and so not of interest to all Kossacks, but I always let people know when I publish something.

I will beg and grovel for clicks on my weekly humor column, but this is only put up for Indians and people who care what Indians are talking about among themselves.

A newly minted GI Bill student at the University of Texas, I was first exposed to what the political scientists call “salience.” I learned that, for most voters, foreign policy is not a salient issue until it somehow manages to hit them where they live. My generation was bleeding to move Vietnam up on the electoral agenda, nothing more.

Let’s be clear about what salience of issues means to Indians.

It’s not enough that the voters take a position.
