Texas became an unlikely venue for a tactic that has quickly become known as "the people's filibuster." Between the redness of Texas and the arcane rules of the Texas Senate, it's impossible to overstate the odds just overcome by Sen. Wendy Davis and her supporters.
The fact of the matter is that a coalition of women and minorities would be a majority in Texas. That coalition does not as yet exist and minorities are about to have a new round of voter suppression laws brought to bear against them.
The best hope for progressive forces is that the Republican establishment will continue to overplay its hand and cater to the wingnut fringe of the GOP. If the eyes of Texas were upon the Senate, the eyes of the nation were this week upon Texas.
