In Memory of Jay Spotted Elk

This is chapter 13 of my book Ceremonies of Innocence: Essays from the Indian Wars.  It's © 2012 by me, published by Dog Iron Press, and available on Amazon and Kindle and Kobo.

It is posted in response to a diary complaining that there is not enough criminal justice content on Kos.

The other thing I've done is gone back and added "criminal justice" to my tags where appropriate...and there is, because of that, a lot of "new" criminal justice content that did not appear to me to be widely read when I first posted it.

I'm still learning the ropes here.

And, yes, it would not break my heart if I sold enough books to break even on the cost of production, let alone get paid a minimum wage--so I'm not going to apologize for self-advertising.  It's the only kind a retired guy on a fixed income can afford.  I've got three books in print now and I'd really rather continue producing than worry about sales, but without sales, for whom am I producing?

I've also discovered another old guy who lives on a reservation and is not quite retired, but I'm trying to play Boswell to him because, as little as I have earned by writing, I've earned more than him....and he has more talent than I have.

Yeah, I know.  Life ain't fair.  And if I've learned one thing, it's that writers must write whether they get paid or not.  Ditto painters and pickers.  We do what we do and hope somebody notices.
